We are living in uncertain times. Many are dealing with the anxiety of not knowing what's coming next. Some have lost employment, some have lost their savings accounts, some have lost relatives, and some have even lost their lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many are left with the question of why? Believers and unbelievers alike are asking the question, "where is God and why is He letting this happen? I'll be honest there were moments as this virus spread across the world and the US, similar questions came to mind. As I reflect on the Scriptures, I am reminded that God often allowed trouble to occur in order to get our attention.
Could it be that we were so focused on other things in our lives that they had become idols? Could it be that sports, entertainment, careers, and shopping for material possessions had become idols to us that we worshiped more than we worshiped the creator of the universe, God Himself? God declares in His Word as He was speaking to Moses, "for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God..."(Exodus 34:14) Could it be that God is allowing such a pandemic on a Biblical scale to occur in order to get our attention? I believe so. It's not all terrible. God has given us an opportunity to refocus our attention on Him. When we do that, God makes a promise. In 2 Chronicles 7:14 God reminds His people, "If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." Lets take the opportunity that God has given us. Let's humble ourselves, let's acknowledge that God is bigger than we are and had total control. Let's pray and seek His face, let's cry out to God and ask for His help in the midst of this pandemic, let's turn from our wicked ways and repent. Let's agree with God about our sin, let's be honest with Him about the things that we allowed to take His place and become the focus of our worship. Let's turn our focus to Him and place Him in His proper place in life. Let's begin to worship Him not only with our mouths in speech, but also in our day to day lives in how we live. As we do that, God promises that He will hear from Heaven and heal our land.
